Every month we like to share with you an
expert perspective on Anna Maria Island living. This month, our theme has been
shopping and style, and so for our Experts piece we had to go with the most
stylish person we know – Mark Nodeen of 390
Design.
At first glance, you might not think of
Mark as a style icon if you were to see him in his battered jeans and
threadbare t-shirts and paint-splattered hands. But we’re not talking sartorial
style (though he actually kind of rocks his laid-back look): we’re talking
about furniture and interior design. And right now, Mark Nodeen is setting the
tone for sustainable design throughout the Suncoast with his handcrafted furniture
and one-of-a-kind perspective.

Mark is probably best known for his line of
Delec-Tables. His farm style-inspired tables (which are each individually
hand-crafted out of reclaimed wood) combine rustic elements and a modern edge
along with the 390 Design trademark floating leg. The result is a table that is
has a sleek graphic impact, but also a real sense of heft and history.
Mark builds his pieces by hand in his small
at-home workshop and backyard, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a huge
impact. When Poppo’s Taqueria (one of
our favorite sustainable eateries on the Anna Maria Island) opened a second
location in Bradenton earlier this year, they hired Mark to design and
custom-build all of the restaurant’s furniture and much of the décor. While in
the middle of that project, he was also approached to design the café area for
the new Whole
Foods in Clearwater (his furniture can be seen there now).
In the meantime, 390 Design is popping up
all over the place. You’d be hard-pressed to walk past a Anna Maria restaurant
or retailer these days that doesn’t have one of his A-frame signs out front
(appropriately enough, in his catalogue they are dubbed “The
Anna Maria”).
Stores from Sarasota up to Tampa are
carrying his furniture line. And he has continued to do custom pieces and small
space design for clients in Anna Maria, Sarasota, and the surrounding areas.
Furniture trends will come and go. But as
far as we’re concerned, the fresh and fun sustainable pieces by 390 Design are
timeless classics.
